Marysville Medical Practice

How you can order your repeat/ acute prescriptions is changing soon

From 28th June we will have a new NHS Prescription Ordering Direct (POD) system

which means your medication can be ordered through a simple phone call.

Why? The POD is staffed by dedicated and fully trained prescription clerks who have access to all your repeat prescription records. We feel this will satisfy many patients who want to phone for their repeat medication, as well as being safer as properly trained call handlers are used. The aim is not only convenience but to ensure patients are receiving the correct quantity of medication. It reduces unnecessary medication being dispensed and has saved a huge amount of NHS money so far.

POD

For those who want the freedom to order any time of day- this can still be done through the online EMIS access – ask for a leaflet or see our website, but we will no longer be accepting e-mails for repeat medications.

On line access can also allow you to look at results, and documents on your records!

Before you book appointments on line with one of our GP's please consider the following options where your problem may be dealt with sooner.

Call NHS 111 - for help and advice or if you are not sure which NHS service you need.

Ask you local PHARMACIST for advice - your pharmacist can give you advice for many common minor illnesses, such as diarrhoea, minor infections, headache, travel advice or sore throats

For common or short-term ailments.

Shropshire practices spend £1.3M on medicines which are easily available to purchase from your local pharmacy or supermarkets.

SHROPSHIRE CCG supports GPs to reduce their prescribing of these products:

  • Patients have a responsibility to look after themselves and their children where possible and manage self-limiting minor ailments with support from their local pharmacy if needed.
  • Patients should keep a small supply of simple treatments in their own medicine cabinet so they are able to manage minor ailments at home.
  • All of these medicines are widely available from supermarkets, pharmacies and some dispensing GP Practices at reasonable cost.
  • Many of these treatments are more expensive when prescribed on the NHS compared to when they are purchased in pharmacies or supermarkets e.g. paracetamol is approximately 4x more expensive on prescription.
  • The NHS belongs to everybody and the CCG must ensure that its resources are used in the best possible way for all patients.
  • Some pharmacies may be able to provide these items free of charge under the Pharmacy First scheme.

NHS Shropshire CCG does not support the routine prescribing of medication that is available to buy from local pharmacies or supermarkets for children or adults.

The medications listed below are examples of medicines that should be purchased by the patient/parent/guardian. This list is not exhaustive.
